Sermon: Proper 12 (OT)

Pentecost 6 — 24 July AD 2011

Sermon Theme: God’s Chosen Treasure

Treasure ChestSummary: It’s not what we are or who we are — it’s whose we are. Just as Moses reminded Israel that they weren’t all that important in the world’s eyes, so we must remember that we are, by nature, lost and condemned creatures.

However, just as the Lord assigned great value to Abraham and his heirs by claiming them as His chosen people, so He assigns us the infinite worth of being His children, blood-bought by His beloved Son Jesus.

And just as earthly owners jealously guard their possessions, so God even more diligently clings to His treasured people. For we know that our purchase price was not “gold or silver” but instead Jesus’ “holy, precious blood” and “His innocent suffering and death. (Small Catechism: Meaning of the 2nd Article)”

Text: [Moses said,] “For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the Lord set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but it is because the Lord loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers, that the Lord has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.” Deuteronomy 7:6-9
