Sermon: Lent 2B (Psalm)
1 March AD 2015
The Second Sunday in Lent
Title: He Has Done It (MP3 Audio)
Summary: Most Christians are quite familiar with Psalm 22, especially the first portion and particularly its opening line. Jesus quoted it during His crucifixion: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” In so doing, our Lord showed the Psalm as a prophecy of His suffering and death.
Yet even as it anticipates the Christ’s holy passion, so Psalm 22 also prepares us for His glorious resurrection. The Lord heard the cries of His afflicted Son and answered them. Even in the agony of His crucifixion, Jesus prayed for our forgiveness and for our oneness with Him and His Father.
Thus also the Psalm’s Messianic prophecy: Its second part confesses that the trials of the opening verses led to a glorious conclusion, an undoing of evil. Life triumphs over death, the Savior vanquishes Satan, and forgiveness covers over and takes away sin.
God will not forsake those who believe in His Son. He promised that those who would come would receive His blessings and proclaim His righteousness. Through Word and sacraments, by the power of the Holy Spirit, and in Christ’s Church, “He has done it.”
Text: I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:
You who fear the Lord, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him, and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!
For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and he has not hidden his face from him, but has heard, when he cried to him.
From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will perform before those who fear him.
The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord! May your hearts live forever!
All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you.
For kingship belongs to the Lord, and he rules over the nations.
All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, even the one who could not keep himself alive.
Posterity shall serve him; it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation; they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn, that he has done it. Psalm 22:22-31

If this occurs, you can either change to QuickTime or another default browser player, copy and paste the link directly into a selected player, or download it to your computer, where it seems to work regardless of which player.
