Sermon: Saint Mary, Mother of God (OT)

12 August AD 2012

Theme: God-Caused, God-Completed

Saint Mary, Mother of God
Summary: While Mary says, “My soul magnifies the Lord” (Luke 1:46), it’s clear from the rest of the Magnificat and from all Scripture that the work of salvation is solely that of God. The only human being who had anything to do with our forgiveness and reconciliation with the Father is the sinless Son of God, Jesus Christ.

Today’s text from Isaiah 61 makes this abundantly clear: God hates what we are by nature, that we are unjust and capable of robbery and great wrong. The only way we can receive justice tempered with mercy is by clinging to Jesus’ victory over sin, death, and devil on His cross.

God grants faith to believe in Jesus. He began this work in us and will complete it through Word and Sacrament, by the power of the Holy Spirit. He causes new life to spring up in the barren soil of sinful mankind. He dresses each of us as a “bridegroom” and a “bride” in Baptism’s robes of righteousness. Whatever magnification there is of God, however we might exult in Him, we know that it’s the result of His salvation and not salvation’s cause.

Text: Instead of your shame there shall be a double portion; instead of dishonor they shall rejoice in their lot; therefore in their land they shall possess a double portion; they shall have everlasting joy.

For I the Lord love justice; I hate robbery and wrong; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. Their offspring shall be known among the nations, and their descendants in the midst of the peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge them, that they are an offspring the Lord has blessed.

Isaiah 61:10
I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

For as the earth brings forth its sprouts, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to sprout up before all the nations. Isaiah 61:7-11

NB: For some reason, a few people have had problems trying to play the inline audio if Windows Media is their default MP3 player. If this occurs, you can either change to QuickTime or another default browser player, copy and paste the link directly into a selected player, or download it to your computer, where it seems to work regardless of which player. Several folks have suggested VLC Player from VideoLAN.
