Mission Sermon on Romans 10:11-17

Mission Observance — 25 September AD 2011

Sermon Theme: Beautiful Feet

Jesus' Beautiful FeetSummary: We usually think of “Missions” as the spread of the Gospel to those who haven’t heard it. However, Paul reminds us that what goes out from the Church is dependent upon what Christ’s Church believes as well as who she sends into the world with the Word of forgiveness. Therefore, mission work begins within the Church, among Christ’s people.

Savages, pagans, and atheists aren’t the only people who need to hear the Law’s harsh condemnation and the Gospel’s sweet forgiveness. All people — including all Christians — must hear the same Word of Christ in order to believe and be saved.

So Christians must not only be concerned with sending out missionaries to foreign lands: They must also receive the Word and its beautiful-footed messengers among themselves. Refusal to honor those entrusted with the saving Gospel or failure to care for their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs dishonors Christ and devalues His own beautiful, dirt-encrusted, nail-pierced, blood spattered, Gospel-bearing feet.

Text: For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent?

Beautiful FeetAs it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?”

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
