Sermon: LaVerna Meyer Funeral
MP3 Audio of the Funeral Sermon for LaVerna Hemme Meyer on 1 October AD 2008
Sermon Text: For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” Romans 1:16-17
Sermon Theme: Shamelessly Righteous
Other Readings: Psalm 126:1-3, 5-6; Daniel 12:1b-3; John 6:27-35, 37-38, 40
Our Savior Jesus Christ has destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel. Let us remember with thanksgiving what God has done through His servant LaVerna.
LaVerna H. Meyer was born in Sweet Springs, Missouri on 18 November 1923 to Arthur and Clara Schelp Hemme. She was reborn as a child of God in the waters of Holy Baptism on 9 December at Holy Cross Lutheran, Emma and remained a member her entire life. On 21 March 1937, through the rite of confirmation, she was admitted to the Lord’s altar to receive the life-giving body and blood of Jesus. Her confirmation verse was Romans 1:16.
She was united in holy wedlock to Vernon Meyer on 5 June 1946. Their wedding text was Galatians 5:22–23, the Fruit of the Spirit. God blessed them with sixty-two years of marriage and three children. On 27 September 2008, God called LaVerna to her eternal rest. She is survived by Vernon, son Dennis (Diane), daughters Deborah (Allan) Martens and Beverly (Rob) Henning, ten grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren , sister Verena Heaper, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers LeRoy and Raymond Hemme.
The Lord gives and the Lord takes away; blessed be the name of the Lord. We give thanks to God our Father through our Jesus Christ, our Lord, for our sister LaVerna.
